SMBs Set the Pace in Productivity Spending

They may be small as compared with larger corporations and conglomerates, but small-to-medium sized businesses (SMBs) are leading the technology charge in a big way and are positioned to put new systems and solutions in place to deliver positive results.

The average annual IT budgets for SMBs has risen by about 26% over the second half of last year to reach $192,000, with most of the anticipated spending coming from SMBs with less than 250 employees, according to Spiceworks' semi-annual State of SMB IT Report that includes responses from 1,000 IT professionals working in organizations with fewer than 1,000 employees.

Cloud-based and hosted IT services top the list of SMB IT demands, with more than 60% of the respondents in the study now making use of these along with such client devices as notebooks, tablets and smartphones. This figure is expected to rise to 66% later this year, with smaller SMBs taking to the cloud faster than larger companies, notes the Spiceworld report.

Other key findings:

- Tablets are tops when it comes to being the driving force in mobile tech, with 59% of respondents saying they already use tablets on their networks;

- While 42% of the respondents say they will buy tablets within the next six months, 65% of SMBs are planning to buy notebooks as well, and 22% are budgeting for notebook/laptop upgrades;

- Smartphone adoption has plateaued and even declined in some segments, as SMBs buy more tablets and notebooks. The reason? Tablets and notebooks can be used with a range of applications, including email, field service, T&E filing, customer relations, transaction processing, and client presentations, points out the study. They can also be used to share photos with the home office and customers, as with real estate applications.

As any SMB knows, it's all about the deal and Dell has a lot of great deals on notebooks, ultrabooks, and tablets that help you keep pace with the competition and ahead of the curve when it comes to technology return on investment.
