Device Convergence Comes Home, Driven by Wireless Tech Advances Small-to-medium business (SMB) executives are spending less time in their office and more time out in the field connecting with customers and clients. They are also relying more on at-home workspaces as satellite locations, especially as tech devices and alternatives continue to evolve.
Driving this trend is an ever-widening range of new tools that make remote working a lot easier and a lot more effective. This includes new smartphones, laptops, desktops and even audio and video technology that can all communicate and exchange data to provide a true virtual work environment.
Right now, there are nearly 10 devices in every home that can be potentially linked to the Internet and share information, says research firm Gartner. This includes computer, smart television, security, and even fitness devices. However, it is expected that 60 million or more WiFi-only devices will be added to homes worldwide by 2016. In-home WiFi networks and evolving new wireless technologies are a critical element in current applications and expected growth.
TechnologyGuide explores these trends and more in a Special Report sponsored by Sony Corp. that includes articles from other sites in the group, including NotebookReview. As SMBs continue to shift their tech bases beyond traditional offices to become more competitive and reactive to opportunities, it is important to know which technologies will play key roles and what route to take as the rules change in terms of mobile productivity.
