The Beauty of On-Screen Navigation is in the Beholder's Eye

Welcome to CES Day Three!

In the end, Windows 8 is all about the touch. This is why nearly every notebook manufacturer is integrating touchscreen technology into even the smallest and lightest laptop, and new displays from Viewsonic and Samsung feature so-called 10-point touch capabilities that quite literally let you use all your fingers to open and manipulate applications.

But, touch is in the eye of the beholder, or more accurately, your eyes can also play an important role in replacing traditional touch to navigate through Windows 8 and applications.

On the CES show floor, Swedish company Tobii was demonstrating an incredible eye- and gaze-tracking technology that turns any screen into a touch-adjacent display. The company demonstrated how it works with gaming software that literally lets you destroy asteroids in the blink of an eye. Very cool.

In one of the many off-site demos taking place at CES, another company - EyeVerify - demonstrated a biometric solution that uses the built-in cameras that are a part of nearly every smartphone, tablet and notebook computer to read the veins in your eyeballs to verify that you are who you are. Sounds creepy, but this is supposedly way more secure than fingerprints since your vein patterns are always stable, said company CEO Toby Rush - even after a hard night of partying and late night activities in Las Vegas.

The technology has a 99.2% accuracy and has lots of potential applications in healthcare, government, and everyday enterprise areas. All in all, a better way to keep an eye on your sensitive data and information.
