The Future of TV: Hint, It Looks Much like the Present Conventional wisdom holds that the TV cable provider days are numbered, and subscribers couldn't be happier with that. With awful customers service, clunky technology, and every rate hike, customers dream of the day when channels are offered ala carte, so they no longer have to pay top dollar for the literally hundreds of channels they never watch. It's fueled by disruptors like Netflix and Aereo, and the beaming potential of internet and mobile app offerings. Rumor has it that major tech brands like Google, Intel, and Apple will be the white knight to slay the cable provider beast with new customer-friendly platforms and services, designed to give viewers what they want, when they want, at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, that isn't happening any time soon. The conventional wisdom may be right, but the entrenched interests won't be ceding ground any time soon, as a careful parsing of the rumor mill and a clear view of the industry reveals.
