You might think fire is the biggest threat to your home, but far more homeowner's insurance claims are filed for water damage.

A house fire can be devastating, especially if you're home when one breaks out. But statistics show that far more homes are damaged by water than anything else. I know from experience how much damage water can cause. Several winters ago, a copper water pipe in my garage attic froze and burst. The crack in the pipe was less than an inch long, but we happened to be traveling when it happened, so the water had been gushing for days by the time we got home.

I not only had to have all of the insulation and drywall in the ceilings and walls replaced, the water also destroyed the garage-door openers, hundreds of dollars in tools, some furniture I'd been storing in there, and more. My insurance claim ended up being around $28,000. If I'd had one of the water leak detectors we tested and reviewed over the past few weeks, the damage–and the disruption to my family's life–would have been much less severe.

That's just one of the great stories you'll find on TechHive this week, please check out what else we have to offer. And if you'd like to provide us with some feedback, please send email directly to me at mbrown@techhive.com. I won't be able to respond to every comment, but I'd love to know what you think of the site and what we can do to better serve your needs.

Cheers!
