CES 2013: New Technology Takes Centerstage at Week-Long Gathering

The Consumer Electronics Show mega week kicks off today, although yesterday's preview press day was filled with glimpses of prototype OLED 4K TVs, new mobile chips and smartphones, celebrity rock bands, sneak peeks of new movies and even Big Bird sharing an initial keynote presentation. This is, after all, Las Vegas and this is CES 2013, the premier launching pad for new products and consumer and business technologies.

On the eve of the show's week-long run, Qualcomm stepped in to fill the gap left by long-time keynote company Microsoft - although the company's CEO Steve Ballmer made an appearance to show off new Windows phones. At an event later that night, a range of companies came together to debut new tablets (HP) and slick security solutions (Validity) under the umbrella of a tailgate party theme.

In all, some 20,000 new products are expected to be launched and have its first public debut at the show (like the Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 11s above). CES continues through Thursday and is expected to draw more than 156,000 people, according to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), owner of the CES franchise. Not all are major announcements, of course, but every one adds to the excitement that is CES. If you have any doubts, just ask attendees who traveled from around the world to attend the event and be a part of an annual technology ritual.

TechnologyGuide is there in full force this week and will be reporting on the best and most important new product developments across our six (soon to be seven) news and review Web sites. We'll also come straight to you every day of the show in our special newsletters so you can experience and be a part of the action.

The following is just a handful of the new products shown yesterday and covered by the editors at CES 2013.
